      The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, BWCAW, in Ely, MN is home to a great variety of wildlife. More than fifty species of animals and two hundred species of birds make their home here. Our native animals include deer, moose, black bear, beaver, otter, mink, lynx, bobcat and the timberwolf. Sigurd Ferdinand Olson (April 4, – Janu ) was an American author, environmentalist, and advocate for the protection of more than thirty years, he served as a wilderness guide in the lakes and forests of the Quetico-Superior country of northern Minnesota and northwestern was known honorifically as the Bourgeois — a term the voyageurs of old used of Alma mater: Northland College, University .

      Calvin Rutstrum (Octo – February 5, ) was an American author who wrote fifteen books, most relating to wilderness camping experiences and techniques. Most of his books were written at his cabin on Cloud Bay, Ontario. "His wilderness experiences begin just before WWI and span the modern era including the environmental movement of the late s and s.
